Office of Innovation and Information Technology

The Office of Innovation and Information Technology (PROITI) seeks to promote innovation in academic and administrative activities by improving information systems and technologies, as well as expanding technology transfer mechanisms for society in collaboration with FURG's Innovation Environments. For the development of its activities, PROITI has, in its organizational structure, the Scientific and Technological Park – OCEANTEC and the Center for Information Technology Management - CGTI.

OCEANTEC aims to foster knowledge-based economies through the integration of scientific and technological research produced at FURG with government agencies and different sectors of society, promoting the strengthening of institutional vocation, technology transfer, intellectual property protection, entrepreneurship, and the development of innovative ventures, aiming to increase job and income generation in the territories where FURG is located. Part of OCEANTEC is the Technology-Based Business Incubator – INNOVATIO, the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office, the Open Innovation Laboratory – OPENLAB, the BioTec Innovation Centers (Marine Biotechnology) and iTEC (Robotic Systems and Automation - Embrapii Unit) and the FURG Junior Companies. Among the services offered by OCEANTEC are: intellectual property protection requests; the recognition of Junior Companies; the incubation of companies; entrepreneurial training; the proposition of agreements and partnership agreements to promote the meeting between the supply and demand for innovative products and services.

CGTI aims to design, develop, and structure the information technology services necessary for the development of administrative and academic activities, in order to offer an informational environment with access, transparency, and effectiveness of the services provided by the University. Among the services offered by CGTI are: promoting and executing the actions necessary for the implementation of information technology policies; coordinating the qualification activities of information systems and technologies; organizing, expanding, and keeping the information technology infrastructure updated; planning and monitoring activities related to information systems, information security, network engineering, network services, and support and service to the community.

The Embrapii iTec/FURG Unit has the mission of producing, making available, training, disseminating, and transferring technologies and infrastructure based on Robotics, Automation, and Data Science, promoting the competitiveness of public and/or private organizations, through the development of innovative technological solutions, including the promotion of employment and income in the region covered by FURG.

The role of digital transformation of processes and organizations

Through the Center for Information Technology Management, the Office manages innovation and digital transformation initiatives in information technology systems and services in order to serve the University and society. The digital transformation of processes and, consequently, of organizations aims to: offer simple and intuitive digital public services, consolidated on a single platform; grant broad access to information and open data from the University, to enable the exercise of citizenship and innovation in digital technologies; promote the integration and interoperability of the University's databases with those of the government; promote innovation in information management based on data and evidence and in predictive and personalized services, with the use of emerging technologies; adopt cloud-based process and service technology as part of the technological structure of the University's services and sectors; and optimize information technology infrastructures.

Awakening the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship

To stimulate interest in innovation and entrepreneurship among students and the academic community, the Office promotes projects and programs for technological development, scientific, technological, and innovation initiation, financed with private resources, FURG resources, and resources from funding agencies such as Embrapii, Capes, CNPq, and Fapergs. The Embrapii iTec-FURG Unit has been promoting the celebration of partnership agreements with companies since 2020, where students, researchers, and servers work on technology transfer in the realization of prototypes to solve problems in the productive sector. The Entrepreneurial Education project, implemented since 2016, promotes events, trails, workshops, and hackathons that train and bring students closer to companies and communities. The MAI/DAI- CNPq program – Academic Master's and Doctorate for Innovation, promotes Master's, Doctorate, and Industrial Technological Initiation scholarships for Postgraduate Programs to work with companies and industries in the region. The Technological Innovation Fair – FITEC and the Innovation Congress – CITEC disseminate the University's entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives to society. These events integrate society, students, junior companies, entrepreneurial scientists, inventors, academic units, and OCEANTEC and INNOVATIO innovation environments.
